The vastus lateralis is the largest of the quadriceps muscles. It originates from the greater trochanter and linea aspera of the femur and inserts into the patella. It extends the knee and is the primary muscle responsible for the outer sweep of the thigh. It is heavily involved in all knee extension movements.
