The vastus intermedius is a deep quadriceps muscle located beneath the rectus femoris. It originates from the anterior and lateral surfaces of the femur and inserts into the patella. It extends the knee and works with the other quadriceps muscles. It is not visible as it lies deep to the rectus femoris.
