The vastus medialis is one of the quadriceps muscles, located on the inner side of the thigh. It originates from the linea aspera of the femur and inserts into the patella. It extends the knee and is particularly important for knee stability, especially the final degrees of knee extension. It is often called the "teardrop" muscle.
