Sugar

Limited nutritional benefit

White granulated sugar (sucrose), values as sold.

Sugar — photo 1

Refined white sugar (sucrose) from sugar cane or sugar beet, used to sweeten tea and coffee and in baking, desserts, jams and sauces. A 5 g teaspoon gives about 19 kcal, all of it sugar, with no fiber or protein and only traces of minerals. Brown sugar is nearly identical: its thin coating of molasses adds color and flavor, but its extra minerals are negligible in teaspoon amounts.
