Tempura

Moderate nutritional value

Japanese battered seafood or vegetables, deep-fried.

Tempura — photo 1

Tempura is shrimp, fish or vegetables such as sweet potato and eggplant, dipped in a thin, lumpy batter of flour, egg and ice-cold water and deep-fried for two to three minutes until crisp. The coating is thin but still absorbs oil, so about half of the calories come from fat. The soy-based dipping sauce adds sodium, so use it sparingly.
