Kefir — photo 1

Kefir is milk fermented with a mix of bacteria and yeasts, giving a tart, sometimes slightly fizzy drink thinner than yogurt. A 250 ml glass has about 110 kcal, 10 g of protein and 335 mg of calcium, and is high in vitamin A, vitamin B12, riboflavin and phosphorus. These values are for kefir fortified with vitamins A and D; unfortified kefir has less of both, and flavored kinds add sugar.
