Cilantro — photo 1

Cilantro, the fresh leaves of the coriander plant, is used raw in Mexican, Indian, Thai, Vietnamese and Middle Eastern food: salsas, chutneys, curries, pho and salads. A 10 g portion has about 2 kcal and about 31 µg of vitamin K, roughly a quarter of the daily value, plus about 34 µg of vitamin A. Some people taste cilantro as soapy, a trait linked to smell-receptor genes; flat-leaf parsley is the usual substitute.
