Exceptional nutritional value
Fresh black currants, values for the raw berries.
Black currants are tart berries grown mainly in Europe and eaten fresh with sugar or cooked into jam, compote, juice and cordial. A 100 g portion has about 63 kcal and 15 g of carbohydrate, including about 5 g of fiber, with about 180 mg of vitamin C, twice the daily value, and more iron (1.5 mg) and calcium (55 mg) than most fruits. Vitamin C is partly lost in long cooking, so the fresh or frozen berries keep more of it than jam.
