Walnuts — photo 1

Walnuts are eaten as a snack, sprinkled over oatmeal and salads, and used in baking. Unlike most nuts, their fat is mainly polyunsaturated, including the plant omega-3 fat ALA, of which walnuts are the richest common nut source. A 30 g handful, about 14 halves, has about 196 kcal and is high in copper and manganese. This fat turns rancid quickly, so walnuts are best stored cool and sealed.
