Taro — photo 1

Taro is a starchy corm eaten boiled, steamed or mashed (as Hawaiian poi) in the Pacific, Asia, Africa and the Caribbean; it must be cooked, as raw taro irritates the mouth. A 150 g cooked portion gives about 210 kcal, under 1 g of protein, nearly 8 g of fiber and about 730 mg of potassium, and is a good source of vitamin B6, vitamin E, copper and manganese.
