Sardines — photo 1

Canned sardines are small oily fish eaten whole, soft bones included, on toast, in salads or directly from the can. A standard can, about 90 g drained, gives about 22 g of protein and 0.9 g of the omega-3 fats EPA and DHA, and is very high in vitamin B12 and selenium and high in phosphorus, calcium and vitamin D. Most of the calcium comes from the bones, and a can has a moderate 280 mg of sodium.
