Chili Pepper — photo 1

Hot chili peppers are small fresh pods, green or ripe red, used raw or cooked to add heat to salsas, curries, stir-fries and sauces. A 15 g pepper has about 6 kcal and about 29 mg of vitamin C, roughly a third of the daily value. Their heat comes from capsaicin, which is concentrated in the white inner ribs that hold the seeds; removing ribs and seeds makes the pepper noticeably milder.
