The subscapularis is the largest of the four rotator cuff muscles. It originates from the subscapular fossa of the scapula and inserts into the lesser tubercle of the humerus. Its main function is internal rotation of the shoulder, and it also helps stabilize the shoulder joint. It is the only rotator cuff muscle that performs internal rotation.
