The levator scapulae is a muscle located on the side and back of the neck. It originates from the transverse processes of the upper cervical vertebrae and inserts into the superior angle of the scapula. It elevates and rotates the scapula, and also assists in neck extension and lateral flexion. This muscle is often tight in people with poor posture and can cause neck pain.
