Melted cheese between slices of bread.

Grilled Cheese Sandwich — photo 1

A grilled cheese sandwich is two slices of bread with cheese, usually cheddar or American, buttered on the outside and cooked in a pan until the bread is crisp and the cheese melts. It is high in fat, much of it saturated, and in sodium, with refined carbohydrate from the bread and moderate protein from the cheese. Pair it with tomato soup or a salad; whole-grain bread adds fiber.
