Collagen Peptides

Limited nutritional benefit

Hydrolysed collagen powder, about 90% protein, rich in glycine and proline, almost no tryptophan.

Collagen Peptides — photo 1

Collagen peptides are gelatin broken down until they dissolve in cold water, made from bovine hide, pork skin or fish skin. About 90% is protein, and a third of it is glycine, with proline and hydroxyproline making up much of the rest, the building blocks of tendon, skin and cartilage. That is also its weakness as food: it has almost no tryptophan and little leucine, so it scores close to zero as a protein for muscle and should not be counted towards a muscle-building protein target. 10-15 g a day with vitamin C has modest evidence for joint and tendon comfort and for skin elasticity. Fish collagen is a fish allergen.

What to know while taking it

Timing is flexible: the peptides can be taken with a meal or between meals, and no particular food is needed for absorption. The amino acid profile is unbalanced and low in the essential amino acids, so collagen does not count as a complete protein source and should not displace ordinary dietary protein. It is a supplement rather than a treatment, and any effect builds slowly over weeks rather than being felt immediately.

When to see a doctor

Joint pain that is new, worsening, one-sided, or comes with swelling, redness or fever is not something a supplement addresses, and warrants seeing a doctor rather than continuing to wait it out.
