Mometasone (nasal)

Mometasone (nasal)

Respiratory Over the counter ATC code: R01AD09

What it is

Mometasone nasal spray is a corticosteroid applied directly to the lining of the nose, where it reduces the inflammation behind allergic swelling and mucus. It acts locally in the nasal passages. It is available without prescription and is used for allergic symptoms and for nasal congestion.

Used for

  • Allergy
  • Nasal congestion

What to know while taking it

The effect is gradual rather than immediate and takes weeks of regular daily use to reach its full extent, so an apparent lack of benefit in the first days is expected and is not a reason to give up. It works best used steadily through the allergy season rather than only on bad days. Aiming the spray away from the central wall of the nose reduces irritation of the mucosa.

When to see a doctor

Nosebleeds are a known possibility; occasional light spotting is common, but bleeding that is heavy, repeated or persistent should be seen by a doctor. Nasal pain, crusting or symptoms that do not improve after several weeks of steady use also deserve medical review.

Worth knowing

  • Takes weeks to work
  • Nosebleeds are possible
