Absolute lymphocyte count is the number of lymphocytes in a volume of blood, calculated from the white cell count and the differential. Lymphocytes are the arm of the immune system that handles viruses and long-term immune memory, and they also include the cells that produce antibodies. Because it is an absolute number rather than a share, it does not shift merely because another cell line has changed.

Raised counts most often follow viral infection, and in adults a persistently high count is one of the findings that prompts a look at the lymphoid system. Lowered counts are seen most often during acute infection and stress, with corticosteroid treatment, and in states of chronic immune depletion. Direction matters more than the exact figure, and a value drifting outside the range once is a reason to repeat the count later and discuss it with a doctor rather than to conclude anything.
Recent infection, physical stress, surgery and steroid or immunosuppressive therapy all move this number, and it can take weeks after an illness to settle. It is read next to the total white cell count, the lymphocyte percentage and the other differential fractions, which together show whether one line changed or the whole count did.
